[Seng]zhao says: The method of dwelling in illness requires first knowing the root of illness. The arising of sickness and illness is entirely due to the false thoughts and inversions of previous lives. Because of false thoughts and inversions, afflictions arise; once afflictions have arisen, one cannot be without a body; having a body, one cannot be without ailments. Tracing back to their fundamental basis, they are empty, false, and unreal; since the basis is unreal, who is it that experiences illness? This clarifies a beginner's initial practice of the contemplation of non-self. [Dao]sheng says: Furthermore, there is nothing that is ill. Since there is nothing that is ill, illness too is non-existent.
