[Dao]sheng says: The next two sentences also clarify that cause and effect are precisely non-self. When the various dharmas combine to form it, they arise by being conditioned by one another: those that arise in mutual dependence cannot but cause one another to arise; it is not that they are able to cause one another to arise. If they were able to cause one another to arise, there would certainly be knowledge of mutually causing to arise. But what is known resides in the other and does not reside in oneself; conversely, it would be mutual knowing. This is precisely the meaning of being an independent self.
