[Seng]zhao says: The myriad things are tumultuous; for whose sake are their gathering and dispersing? When conditions combine, they arise; when conditions disperse, they separate. Gathering and dispersing have no prior agreement; therefore, dharma and dharma do not know one another. [Dao]sheng says: Those that arise from conditions also cannot but arise from them; it is not that they are able to arise from another. If they were able to arise from them, there would certainly be knowledge of arising from them. But what is known resides in oneself and not in the other, so there is no meaning of mutual knowing. This also would be the meaning of an independent self.
