[Kumāra]jīva says: In the language of Qin, this means 'slaying the thieves of the fetters'. This arises from eliminating the fetters, and is named accordingly. It is also able to eliminate the fetters, and hence receives its name from its capacity. [Seng]zhao says: 'Arhat' in the language of Qin means 'destroyer of the thieves of the fetters'. The afflictive fetters such as jealousy, anger, and wrong views are eradicated by means of benevolence; thus it can be called arhat [benevolence].
