[Kumāra]jīva says: If ordinary people practice benevolence while having the fetter of craving, there can be equals to it; for one who practices benevolence with craving severed, nothing can equal it. [Seng]zhao says: In the two vehicles and up to the sixth stage, they all give rise to benevolence by feeling affection for others. If one can give rise to benevolence without an affectionate mind toward them, this benevolence is transcendent and can be called peerless.
