[Kumāra]jīva says: He asked although he already knew, wishing to lead the assembled multitude to produce faith. Borrowing the thrones from that land had two meanings: first, to reveal the adorned and pure virtues of the buddhas that produce extraordinary thrones, inspiring the beginner bodhisattvas to deepen their aspiration; second, to allow the teaching to flow between the two lands by means of this going and returning. [Seng]zhao says: The mahāsattva Mañjuśrī wanders and teaches without bounds, and has surely seen the extraordinary and exquisite thrones in various lands. Pure Name wished to arouse feelings of reverence and faith in the gathering, so he asked before fetching them, demonstrating that he had investigated the matter. [Dao]sheng says: Asking first was to clarify that what would subsequently be brought was genuine.
