[Kumāra]jīva says: Just as in the second dhyāna one delights in being free from the lower stages and thus joy arises, one also with a deep mind loves and takes pleasure in all wholesome things and true dharmas, giving rise to great delight, entertaining oneself with this without any other external pleasure. Since joy is an instrument of pleasure, it is compared to a wife. [Seng]zhao says: Joy of the Dharma means perceiving the Dharma and producing internal joy. Worldly people take pleasure in the beauty of a wife; the bodhisattva takes pleasure in the joy of the Dharma. [Dao]sheng says: A wife rejoices in maintaining chastity and grieves when losing chastity. Taking joy in the Dharma is just like this.
