[Kumāra]jīva says: Previously having spoken of the couch, one rests in peaceful sleep; when sleeping peacefully, there is a method for awakening, so next music is mentioned. When nobles of foreign lands sleep, they must first order musicians to play music softly when the light of dawn appears, and only then do they awaken. Here, the sound of the Dharma from extensive learning awakens them from their meditative sleep.
[Seng]zhao says: When the kings of foreign lands lie down and wish to rise, they play strings and bamboo flutes. Bodhisattvas who awaken themselves sleep peacefully in the four dhyānas, using extensive learning to awaken themselves.
[Dao]sheng says: When nobles of foreign lands lie down and wish to awaken, they play music to awaken them. Being awakened through hearing is what is meant by this.
