[Kumāra]jīva says: 'Seed', 'fundamental root', and 'causes and conditions' have the same meaning. Based on the previous [discussion] that the mahāsattva transforms beings by adapting to their kinds and penetrates the Buddha path, one certainly knows that sentient beings who accumulate evil are able to generate the aspiration for awakening; being able to generate the aspiration for awakening is itself the cause and condition of the Buddha path, and therefore he asks about the Buddha's seed. It is also said that new learners wish to attain buddhahood but do not yet know the cause of buddhahood, so he asks about its cause. [Seng]zhao says: Having already explained how the Buddha path is penetrated, he furthermore asks from where that path arises. Vimalakīrti and Mañjuśrī take turns asking and answering, responding to the capacities of beings—who can fathom their reasons? [Dao]sheng says: The 'seed of the Tathāgata' is spoken by analogy to a grain seed. Just previously, displaying all evils was explained as the Buddha's [work]; now, he clarifies that real evils serve as the seed, which is why he follows by asking this in reverse.
