Then the illusory bodhisattva immediately ascended upward before the assembly. The entire gathering saw him go until he reached the All-Fragrances realm and paid homage at the feet of that buddha. They also heard his words: "Vimalakīrti bows his head at the feet of the World-Honoured One, paying boundless reverence. He inquires after your daily well-being: are your illnesses few, your vexations few, and your physical strength comfortable? He wishes to obtain the remnants of what the World-Honoured One has eaten, desiring to perform buddha-work in the saha-world, to cause those who delight in lesser dharmas to be able to propagate the Great Way, and also to cause the fame of the Tathāgata to be universally heard." Those mahāsattvas, seeing the illusory bodhisattva, praised it as unprecedented: "From where has this superior person come? Where is the saha-world? What is meant by 'those who delight in lesser dharmas'?" They immediately questioned their buddha.
