The Buddha told them: "Below, past buddha-lands as numerous as the sands of forty-two Ganges rivers, there is a world named Saha, where the buddha is named Śākyamuni, currently residing. In that evil world of the five turbidities, he expounds the teachings of the Way for sentient beings who delight in lesser dharmas. There is a bodhisattva there named Vimalakīrti, dwelling in the inconceivable liberation, who preaches the Dharma for the bodhisattvas; he has therefore dispatched this apparition to come and praise my name, and also to extol this land so as to cause those bodhisattvas to increase their merits." Those bodhisattvas said: "What kind of person is he to have produced such an apparition, with power of virtue, fearlessness, and riddhipāda such as this?" The Buddha said: "Exceedingly great! He sends apparitions everywhere to all ten directions to perform buddha-work and benefit sentient beings." Thereupon Fragrance Accumulation Tathāgata filled a bowl made of all fragrances with fragrant food and gave it to the illusory bodhisattva. At that time, those nine million bodhisattvas spoke out in unison: "We wish to go to the saha-world to make offerings to Śākyamuni Buddha, and also wish to see Vimalakīrti and the other bodhisattvas."
