[Kumāra]jīva says: Kindness and compassion are the foundation of the Buddha Way. The śrāvakas lack these, and therefore they exhaust the existent and dwell in the non-existent. Wishing not to exhaust the conditioned and to accomplish the Buddha Way must depend on kindness and compassion; therefore it is spoken of first. [Seng]zhao says: Kindness and compassion are the foundation for entering existence and the root of planting virtue; therefore, when opening one's words, they are set forth first. [Dao]sheng says: Bodhisattva practice generally consists of two operations: meritorious virtue and wisdom. Meritorious virtue is at the beginning, and wisdom resides at the end. Because the principle of not exhausting the conditioned comes first, meritorious virtue does not exhaust it. Because the principle of dwelling in the unconditioned comes later, wisdom does not dwell in it. Not exhausting the conditioned is the aspiration to seek the principle without abandoning birth and death; taking kindness and compassion as its root, it is explained first.
