[Kumāra]jīva says: Originally lacking the intention to give, because that person came begging, they stimulated my mind of giving; thus, with respect to me, they are a teacher, and hence one gives rise to the thought of a teacher. For instance, when a king of the Yuezhi went out on an excursion to sightsee, several thousand beggars on the roadside raised their hands and called out, each asking for their needs. The king asked his ministers: 'Who are these people? What are they stating?' A minister replied: 'They are beggars.' The king, possessing sharp faculties of wisdom, immediately understood their intent and told the ministers: 'They are my great teachers, not beggars. You simply do not understand their words. Their requesting their needs is expounding the Dharma for me, not begging. They are saying: "In our past lives, we were also kings, but because we did not practice giving, we received this retribution. If the king does not give now, he will also be like this in the future." For this reason, you should know that they are my great teachers.' [Seng]zhao says: Although the beggars wish to benefit themselves, they actually benefit me; therefore one regards them as good teachers.
