[Kumāra]jīva says: A question asks: 'The fragrance in the highest chapter pervaded and perfumed the three thousand [worlds]; how could Ānanda not have smelled it?' The answer says: 'Because it was not his allotted portion, he did not smell it though close by; now there is a condition by which he can smell it.' [Seng]zhao says: The Tathāgata was about to discern the conditions of the fragrant rice, and therefore caused Ānanda to smell it.
