[Seng]zhao says: Its brightness surpasses the three luminaries—who could call it dark? Its darkness exceeds a dark room—who could call it bright? Thus, being dark in darkness and bright in brightness, can that which is able to be dark and able to be bright be the doing of brightness and darkness? Therefore it is said to be neither dark nor bright. [Dao]sheng says: When brightness is not in the traces, it is dark; yet the principle cannot reside [there], so it is not dark. When the traces conversely possess brightness, it is bright; yet because that is grasped by others, it cannot be considered brightness.
