[Kumāra]jīva says: Since that land does not necessarily use only fragrance to perform the Buddha's works, they requested the Dharma of verbal teaching. Also, because they intended to go throughout the ten directions to transform defiled lands, they requested varied Dharmas. Furthermore, having traveled far to another realm, it would not be fitting to return empty-handed. Again, because those bodhisattvas there would surely ask about the highest essentials, they sought to receive unusual teachings. They also requested it wishing to make those bodhisattvas aware of kindness. How would they make them aware of kindness? Those bodhisattvas dwell in a pure land; merely eating fragrant rice, they naturally enter into moral conduct. Always in bliss, they forget their bliss; forgetting their bliss, they forget that from which it originates. That from which it originates is the Buddha, and they are dim to this; this is not knowing kindness. If they hear that the two gateways below are obtained only after suffering, they will then awaken to the fact that what is obtained naturally comes from a wondrous cause and profound merit. [Seng]zhao says: Having realized that the Buddha's works are difficult to conceive, they wished to request the Dharma and return to their land, intending to propagate the Tathāgata's inconceivable Way and cause the beings of their native country to recollect the Buddha's meritorious virtues. [Dao]sheng says: They request the Dharma for returning to that land.
