Next, revealing the place of teaching: "In Vaiśālī" refers to it in a broad sense. This is translated as "Vast and Adorned." "The Āmrapālī Grove" points specifically to the particular location. People think that because this grove has an abundance of mango (āmra) trees, it is called the Āmra Grove; the facts are not so, but rather it takes its name from the owner of the grove. There was a woman born from a mango tree, who was then called the Mango Tree Woman, similar to the "Woman Born of a Plum" spoken of in the sūtras. This grove was the grove of that Āmrapālī; taking its name from the owner, it was called the Āmra Grove. When the Buddha arrived in that country, this woman donated the grove and erected a vihāra; therefore, keeping its original name, it was called the Āmra Grove. Wandering and teaching within it is referred to as "residing." The dharmakāya is uniform and truly has no dwelling place; yet manifesting transformation in a specific locality, it is therefore said that he "resided."
