次科其文。於中有二：一、約序科判。從此至後「獨寢一床以疾臥」來，文別有三：一、維摩詰念問為由；二、如來因念告命問疾；三、維摩念文殊師利與眾來下，空室待問。二、就正宗科判其文。從此訖盡〈香積品〉來，文別有二：一、維摩詰念待聖問；二、「佛知」下，如來告問，顯其所說。科別如是。

Next is outlining the text. In this there are two parts: / 1. Outlining the division in terms of the preface. From here down to "lying sick alone on a single bed," the text has three distinct parts: (1) Vimalakīrti's thought of being inquired after as the occasion; (2) The Tathāgata, because of that thought, commanding inquiries after his illness; (3) Vimalakīrti thinking of Mañjuśrī coming with the assembly, and emptying the room to await the inquiries. / 2. Outlining the division of the text with respect to the main doctrinal section. From here through the end of the "Chapter on the Fragrant Accumulation" (Xiangji), the text has two distinct parts: (1) Vimalakīrti thinking of awaiting the inquiries of the noble ones; (2) From "The Buddha knew" onwards, the Tathāgata commands inquiries, revealing what is expounded. / Such are the structural divisions.
