2.54

釋中有三：一、舉昔日被教由緣。二、「我即為禮而問」已下，顯彼教辭。三、「說是法時五百天人發菩提」下，明教利益。初中「憶昔」，舉被教時。「出毘耶離維摩方入」，彰被教處。

In the explanation there are three: 1. Adducing the past cause and conditions of being instructed. 2. From "I then paid homage and asked" downward, revealing his words of instruction. 3. From "When this Dharma was expounded, five hundred devas and humans brought forth the [mind of] bodhi" downward, clarifying the benefit of the instruction. In the first part, "Remembering the past" adduces the time of being instructed. "As I was departing from Vaiśālī, Vimalakīrti was just entering" reveals the place of being instructed.
