4.23

就初辨明淨土果中，初舍利弗念食為由，後維摩詰為之取食，顯示自己不思議力，并顯香積淨土之事。舍利念中，「於是舍利」，舉興念人。以此慧勝能多起發，故偏生念。下出所念。「日時欲至，此諸菩薩當於何食」。因尚空室，故生此念。良以飲食，時中所須，所以念之。又因念食多有開發，故今念之。

Regarding the first part, distinguishing and explaining the results of the pure land: first, Śāriputra thinking of food serves as the occasion; later, Vimalakīrti fetches food for them, displaying his own inconceivable power and simultaneously revealing the affairs of the Fragrance Accumulation pure land. In Śāriputra's thinking, "Thereupon Śāriputra" identifies the person who gave rise to the thought. Because his wisdom is superior, he can stimulate many things, and so he specifically gives rise to the thought. Below, what he thought is brought out: "The time is approaching noon; where shall these bodhisattvas eat?" Because the room was still empty, he gave rise to this thought. Indeed, because food and drink are necessary for the time, he therefore thought of it. Moreover, because thinking of food gives rise to many developments, he now thinks of it.
