4.33

問曰：何故舍利念食偏為菩薩，維摩取食偏為樂小？答：舍利念食偏為菩薩，義如前解。又復舍利實謂菩薩身有所待，故為念食。維摩深知菩薩無須，今時取食，專欲使彼樂小法者覩佛菩薩淨土境界妙用難測，發心願求。

Question: Why did Śāriputra think of food specifically for the bodhisattvas, while Vimalakīrti procured food specifically for those who delight in the small? Answer: Śāriputra thinking of food specifically for the bodhisattvas is explained as above. Furthermore, Śāriputra truly thought that the bodies of the bodhisattvas had physical needs, and therefore thought of food for them. Vimalakīrti deeply knew that the bodhisattvas had no need; now, in procuring the food, he exclusively wished to cause those who delight in the small Dharma to behold the pure land realm of the buddhas and bodhisattvas and its wondrous functions that are hard to fathom, and to generate the aspiration to seek it.
