4.42

自下第五明香積佛攝化儀，令此眾生捨言習學。維摩先問「香積如來以何說法」，下具答之。「彼菩薩曰：我土如來無文字說」，彰彼異此。「但以眾香令諸天人得入律」等，正辨其相。但以眾香得入律行，依香通道。「菩薩各各坐香樹」等，依香具善。文顯可知。

Next, the fifth [major division] clarifies the manner in which the Buddha of Sarvagandhasugandhā gathers and transforms, causing these sentient beings to abandon words and practice. Vimalakīrti first asks, "By what means does the Tathāgata of Sarvagandhasugandhā expound the Dharma?" and below it is answered in full. "That bodhisattva said: 'The Tathāgata of our land does not preach with words and characters'" reveals that it is different from here. "'He merely uses varied fragrances to cause all the devas and humans to enter the discipline...'" and so forth directly discerns its characteristics. Merely through varied fragrances they enter the practice of discipline, accessing the Path by relying on fragrance. "The bodhisattvas each sit beneath fragrant trees..." and so forth means perfecting goodness by relying on fragrance. The text is clear and can be understood.
