From here below is the third [section], in which he discloses his own inferiority and deficiency to reveal that [Vimalakīrti] was difficult to rival. Within this are four phrases: first, disclosing his own past joy and celebration at hearing the Dharma, having attained what he had never had before. Second, from "thereupon toward..." onward, clarifying that having heard this spoken, he inferred the rest from this, thereupon feeling deep reverence toward all bodhisattvas. Third, from "further reflecting..." onward, disclosing his own past praise of Vimalakīrti for having the reputation of a lay householder, yet his eloquence and wisdom could be unhindered and at ease like this. Fourth, from "who could..." onward, clarifying that because of this he aspired to the Great and grew weary of the Small. "Who would not produce the mind of sambodhi?" is aspiring to the Great. "From then on, I no longer urged people toward the practices of the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas" is growing weary of the Small. First the declination, then the explanation. "Therefore, I am not competent" summarizes his inability.
