Question: The previous three directly benefit sentient beings and can well be considered benefiting others; equanimity turns away from transforming [them], so how is it benefiting others? The explanation has four meanings. The first meaning is that although the previous three minds benefit beings, they have not yet been able to fully achieve it; therefore one must cultivate equanimity, letting go of previous cognitive objects so that one's own cultivation can reach the ultimate; thus one must cultivate equanimity. Renouncing what was previously done and further cultivating superior goodness, only then can one ultimately benefit sentient beings. The third meaning is that for the sake of attaining the meaning of ultimate letting go, loving-kindness naturally grants happiness, compassion naturally eradicates suffering, and sympathetic joy naturally rejoices for beings; binding and generating the previous three, it is therefore named benefiting others. The fourth meaning is that letting go of those previously benefited to further transform other people is therefore named benefiting others. In what is discussed here now, the meaning corresponds to the third.
