From here down is the third [part]: Vimalakīrti, knowing they are coming, empties his room to await them. Within this, he first thought, "Mañjuśrī is coming together with the assembly"; this thinks of their coming, not of emptying the room. Some say: this thought desires to empty the room, providing the reason for what follows. Their words are mistaken; truly because Vimalakīrti awaited conversion as if thirsty, and the Tathāgata's mind was joyful, he therefore had this thought. Next, "by spiritual power, he emptied the interior of his room, removing all possessions and attendants": emptying the room is general; removing possessions and attendants reveals the room's emptiness. Desiring to rely on this to initiate what follows, he therefore emptied it. "Leaving only a single bed, he lay down in illness": also desiring to rely on the illness to reveal something, he therefore set out a single bed and manifested lying down in illness.
