From here below is the third [section], which identifies the real to reveal virtues. Within this, it first clarifies the virtue of benefiting oneself; from "By the original vow" downward, it clarifies the virtue of benefiting others. In the former part on benefiting oneself, "At that time Vimalakīrti said to Śāriputra: 'This heavenly maiden has already made offerings to ninety-two billion Buddhas'" reveals her past cultivation. "Has already been able to sport..." and so forth clarifies her prior accomplishments. In the former part on cultivation, she should have made offerings to many Buddhas; now mentioning ninety-two billion Buddhas must be discussed with reference to this single body of present retribution. In the latter part on accomplishments, "has already been able to sport in the supernatural powers of a bodhisattva" clarifies the superiority of her function; this is the autonomous practice of purifying Buddha-lands on the eighth bhūmi and above. "Whose vows are complete" shows that her virtues are fully prepared. "Has attained the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas" clarifies the depth of her realization. "Abides in non-retrogression" displays the height of her stage. Those on the seventh bhūmi and above equally attain the forbearance of non-arising; here, abiding in non-retrogression refers to the eighth bhūmi and above. Moving upward spontaneously in the flow of the stream of dharmas is called abiding in non-retrogression. Benefiting others can be understood [from this].
