Next, it purifies the minds of those śrāvakas in the Āmrapālī grove, causing them to give rise to a profound mind of reverence toward Vimalakīrti. Therein, it first explains that Vimalakīrti's wisdom and virtue cannot be measured by śrāvakas; afterward, it reveals that all the supernormal powers possessed by Vimalakīrti cannot be performed by the two vehicles. In the first part, it initially says, "Halt, Ānanda!" halting his previous words. It can also halt his calculating mind, hence it says, "Halt." Below, it directly admonishes him. "One who has wisdom should not place limits on bodhisattvas" explains that the person is unfathomable. "All the ocean abysses can still be measured..." and so forth explains that his virtues are difficult to measure; specifically saying "bodhisattvas" directly discusses Vimalakīrti. In the subsequent explanation that the supernormal powers cannot be performed, "Set aside what you and the others, the bodhisattvas, practice" excludes the previous practices. "The supernormal powers manifested at one time by this Vimalakīrti..." and so forth directly clarifies with respect to supernormal powers that they cannot perform them. "This Vimalakīrti" is the single individual. "Manifested at one time" is the brevity of time. "All śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas..." and so forth explains that the people are many. "In hundreds of thousands of kalpas" is the length of time. If many people over many kalpas still cannot do it, how much less could a few people in a brief time perform it? The above is the second part, purifying the mental vessels of the assembly.
