From here below is the second [subdivision], Maitreya's transmission. Therein are two [parts]: First, facing the Buddha, in response to his previous adducing of faults and instructions, he marvels and gasps that it is unprecedented, and vows of himself to abandon and keep away from them. Maitreya had long been free of them, but now speaks these words desiring to cause all persons likewise to abandon and stay far from them. Second, from "Receive and uphold..." downwards, in response to the Buddha's previous adducing of the Dharma and entrustment, he vows of himself to widely propagate it. Therein, first, in response to the Buddha's previous "I entrust to you the gathered bodhi", he expresses his own receiving and upholding. From "If in the future..." downwards, in response to the Buddha's previous "After the Buddha's nirvāṇa, you should propagate it with supernatural powers", he reveals his own transmission and propagation. Therein are three clauses: first, clarifying that when men and women of the future seek the Mahāyāna, he will cause them everywhere to obtain sūtras of this sort; second, giving them the power of mindfulness to make them capable of receiving, upholding, and preaching extensively for others; third, clarifying that those in the future who receive, uphold, and preach will all do so by his own power. Because of the Buddha's prior encouragement that they should widely broadcast and propagate it with supernatural powers, he clarifies that when there are those in the future who receive and study it, it is all established by his own power.
