答曰：若人問言「四諦與四大同不？」此云何答！今不依四宗立四教者，意乃多塗，略出三妨：一，四宗名義，言方似滯；二，細尋研覈，立名作義，似如不便；三，四宗名義，雖言富博，一家往望，攝佛教門，猶有所闕。

Answer: If someone were to ask, "Are the four noble truths identical to the four great elements or not?", how would one answer? As for our not relying on the four tenets to establish the four teachings now, the reasons are manifold, but three hindrances may be briefly stated: 1. the terms and meanings of the four tenets, in their phrasing, seem rigid; 2. upon detailed inquiry and close examination, their establishment of names and formulation of meanings seem unsuitable; 3. although the terms and meanings of the four tenets are said to be rich and broad, looking back from our own school's perspective, they still have deficiencies in subsuming the gates of the Buddha's teachings.
