Second, explaining origin and trace in terms of the distinctive teaching: one may also fully employ the four kinds of origin and trace, which can be understood by analogy with the perfect teaching, but they cannot be used in full. That is, the thirty minds before the grounds have not yet attained the dharmakāya and therefore have no origin and trace. Only the first ground explains origin and trace through the two propositions, which can be understood by analogy with the initial dwelling of the perfect teaching above; from the second ground up to virtual enlightenment, all can be distinguished by the four propositions, as can be understood by deduction; finally, the ultimate stage of wondrous enlightenment also uses only two propositions, which can be understood by analogy with the wondrous enlightenment of the perfect teaching. These are all teachings without actual persons, and are all provisional traces of the perfect teaching.
