第四、辨本迹義者，既用四教分別淨、無垢、稱義，義雖不同，而正用圓教解釋。夫聖人垂應，不無本迹之殊，或示金粟法身，或現補處之像。經說隨緣，高下難測，是以今須辨本迹也。今明此義，略有七重：

Fourth, discerning the meaning of origin and traces: Having used the four teachings to distinguish the meanings of pure, undefiled, and name, although the meanings differ, the perfect teaching is used primarily for explanation. When sages manifest responses, there is inevitably the distinction between origin and traces: either displaying the dharma-body of Suvarṇaprabhāsa, or manifesting the appearance of [a bodhisattva of] one lifetime remaining. Sūtras teach in accordance with conditions, and high and low are difficult to fathom; therefore, we must now discern origin and traces. Now, in clarifying this meaning, there are briefly seven sections:
