Answer: The inconceivable dharma-nature is like empty space: free of thoughts and free of ideation, serenely ever quiescent; penetrating all dharmas, it thoroughly reaches and manifests everywhere—this is the unshared inconceivable. It is not shared with any of the three vehicles of the shared teaching or the Tripiṭaka teaching, nor with ordinary persons. Therefore the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'Pure and limpid—this is true liberation.' The Lotus Sūtra says: 'This Dharma cannot be understood through deliberation or discrimination.' The Pratyutpanna Samādhi Sūtra says: 'Possessing mind, one does not know mind; mind does not see mind. When the mind gives rise to notions, that is delusion; when there are no notions, that is nirvāṇa.' The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: 'If one discriminates and recollects, that is the snare of Māra; being unmoving and without discrimination, this is the seal of the Dharma.' This sūtra says: 'If one makes discriminations regarding the Buddha-Dharma, this is called not conforming to the Dharma.' The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'Ultimately free from delusion, unblemished like empty space.' Thus we know that when all deliberation, discrimination, and recollection completely cease to arise, it is called inconceivable. Therefore the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'Waiting until the water clears, the appearance of the jewel manifests of itself'—that is, the principle of inconceivable buddha-nature becomes manifest. When inconceivable buddha-nature manifests, that is inconceivable liberation.
