First, explaining that sūtra is untranslatable: foreign words contain multiple meanings, meaning the name sūtra contains five senses; how could one merely use the character "jing" to translate it! Therefore Dharma Master Kaishan said: "'Jing' is not a proper translation; it merely substitutes the character jing for sūtra." Just as in this land the sacred teachings of the Duke of Zhou and Confucius are called jing, for the sacred teachings of foreign lands it is appropriate for this land to substitute the character jing. What are called the five senses contained in the name sūtra are: first, root of dharmas; second, subtle unfolding; third, bubbling spring; fourth, marking-cord; fifth, garland.
