Second, discerning the similarity and difference of dharma-nature in terms of the expounding of prajñā shared [with the two vehicles] under the distinctive teaching by clarifying the empty and the non-empty: the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'Supreme emptiness is called wisdom. The wise see the empty as well as the non-empty; the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas see only the empty and do not see the non-empty.' Śrāvakas and bodhisattvas alike see emptiness; thus the principle of dharma-nature is one, which is called 'similarity.' The bodhisattva can see the non-empty, and the non-empty is precisely the nature of wisdom, called seeing buddha-nature; this is the 'difference.' It is like three beasts crossing a river: two beasts cross by floating and know only that the water is yielding; if an elephant crosses by floating, dipping down to the bottom, floating it knows the water is yielding, and reaching the bottom it touches the ground and knows it is not yielding.
