Second, clarifying the brief use of the four siddhāntas to generate contemplation and teaching: Now, the source of the mind is profoundly sublime, and the myriad dharmas are dark and obscure. If the buddhas and bodhisattvas did not use the siddhāntas, how could they cultivate the three contemplations to advance upon the path, or expound the gates of the teaching to deliver all beings! Using the four siddhāntas to generate contemplation and teaching so as to penetrate this sūtra briefly comprises seven points: first, translation and explanation; second, discerning the characteristics; third, explaining its establishment; fourth, generating the three contemplations; fifth, generating the four teachings; sixth, generating the sūtras and treatises; seventh, generating this sūtra's teaching.
