From the past Śākyamuni Buddha to Śikhin Buddha is called one asaṃkhyeya kalpa. From then on he was permanently free from female bodies, and at that time did not know of himself whether he would or would not become a buddha. I now say: these are the contemplations of the five stops to the mind, the specific marks, and the general marks of the four bases of mindfulness; using these mind-contemplations he cultivated the pāramitās. At that time, having not yet generated the understanding of warmth, yet possessing compassionate vows, he pacified [the fears of] birth and death, his mind free of cowardice, and therefore was able to destroy the karma of being a woman and always receive a male body. At that time, having not yet generated the understanding of warmth, his stage was among external worldlings, so he did not know of himself that his own body would become a buddha.
