The fulfillment of the pāramitā of vigor (vīrya) is energetic exertion without begrudging life and limb—just as Prince Mahātyāgavān entered the ocean for the sake of his kingdom's people, collected jewels, and obtained the wish-fulfilling jewel; when the ocean deity stole the jewel back into the sea while he was asleep, the prince made a vow to bail out the ocean's water to retrieve the jewel for the sake of sentient beings, and though exhausted and near death, his heart never flagged or retreated; this is called the fulfillment of vigor.
