Fifth, regarding clarifying the four teachings in terms of contemplating the mind: that the four teachings arise from the three contemplations has already been discerned above. Now we merely discuss practicing and applying directly upon the mind, understanding that all doors of teaching arise from the contemplation practice of the initial mind. Since they subsume all sūtra teachings, if one's contemplative mind is clear in a single thought, capable of distinguishing the mind produced from conditions of a single thought of ignorance, and traversing each thought through the four analytical knowledges, then the general intent of all sūtra teachings is penetrated in terms of contemplating the mind. Regarding this, there are four points: first, clarifying the characteristics of the Tripiṭaka teaching in terms of contemplating the mind; second, clarifying the characteristics of the shared teaching in terms of contemplating the mind; third, clarifying the characteristics of the distinctive teaching in terms of contemplating the mind; fourth, clarifying the characteristics of the perfect teaching in terms of contemplating the mind.
