First, the ten faiths: if one of sharp faculties experiences sudden awakening and has deep and marvelous good roots, upon hearing that "all sentient beings are themselves the great nirvāṇa, which cannot be extinguished again; all sentient beings are entirely the marks of bodhi," they immediately give rise to great kindness and great compassion, take as conditions the uncreated four real truths, and generate the four universal vows—this is called generating the bodhi-mind in the perfect teaching. Faith means having faith that all sentient beings are themselves the true nature of liberation, fully endowed with the three treasures of one substance and the threefold contemplation in a single mind; contemplating the principles of the two truths and the three truths, penetrating them without obstruction, achieving the mind of rejoicing, which is the cause of the five grades of disciples; if one attains samādhi, dhāraṇī, and the purity of the six faculties, this is entering the stages of the ten faiths. If one achieves the ten faiths, one can see the principle of the absolute truth and sever the views and desires within the realm, and also see the principle of the conventional truth, distinguishing the dharmas of the ten dharma-realms without mental error or confusion, generating an understanding of the resemblance middle way, and subduing the ignorance beyond the realm. Hence the Renwang jing says: "Bodhisattvas of the ten virtues generate the great mind, parting forever from the ocean of the wheel of suffering in the three realms." The Lotus Sūtra clarifies the purity of the mental faculty, saying: "Although they have not yet attained the bodhisattva's uncontaminated wisdom, their mental faculty is pure like this."
