Second, directly clarifying the four gates entering the substance: regarding the four gates of outsiders, their mental activities are external to principle, their various inverted conceptions correspond with inversion, and they cannot enter the substance of the true nature. Why is this? Because following different gates, what they see of principle is also different; therefore each speaks [differently], claiming to have attained the one ultimate path, giving rise to disputes. Now clarifying the four gates of the Buddhadharma, all can enter the one substance, but there are two kinds of differences: first, the two kinds of four gates of the Tripiṭaka and shared teachings together enter the principle of biased truth; second, the four gates of both the distinctive and perfect teachings together enter the principle of perfect truth.
