Being "their friend and bringing them peace" explains "upholding the true Dharma." Worldly people take those of like mind as friends; the bodhisattva skillfully accords with beings' capacities and conditions, mutually cultivating the four kinds of four noble truths, so that each attains the untainted fruit of the path. Hence the Lotus Sūtra says: "The two of us will also work together with you." If one opens the provisional and reveals the real, they ride together in the Buddha vehicle straight to the place of enlightenment—this is a friend of Dharma kinship. As for "bringing them peace": those not yet at peace in the truth of the path are caused to attain peace; thus the four kinds of sentient beings are caused to be at peace in the four kinds of truth of the path. If one opens the provisional and reveals the real, all are caused to abide peacefully in unsurpassed nirvāṇa; hence it says "being their friend and bringing them peace." In terms of the contemplation of mind: the four kinds of mind—breaking down, embodying to enter emptiness, provisional name, and the Middle Way—do not entreat the threefold contemplation; the threefold contemplation contemplates of itself, which is the meaning of the unsolicited friend. Contemplating the mind formed by breaking down and causing these four minds to abide in the four truths of the path is precisely "being their friend and bringing them peace."
