問：毘尼明時食時衣等，多非正義，那云保得解脫？答：《大論》云「佛說毘尼為令佛法久住，不應求實，求實即生邪見。」今時僧眾不以戒律在心者，恐滅佛法。令依念處修道者，若離念處，施但得富、戒生人天、坐禪得定隨禪受生、多聞說法但是世智，若修念處能破四倒。

Question: The Vinaya explains proper eating times, clothing times, and so forth, much of which is not the ultimate meaning; how can it be called "guaranteed attainment of liberation"?
Answer: The Dàzhìdù lùn states: "The Buddha spoke the Vinaya in order to make the Buddhadharma abide for a long time; one should not seek ultimate truth in it, for seeking ultimate truth in it produces wrong views." If nowadays the community of monks does not hold the precepts and Vinaya in their hearts, it is to be feared that the Buddhadharma will be extinguished. Instructing them to cultivate the path relying on the stations of mindfulness means: if one departs from the stations of mindfulness, giving only obtains wealth, keeping precepts leads to rebirth among humans and devas, sitting in meditation yields dhyāna and rebirth according to that dhyāna, and extensive learning and expounding the Dharma are merely worldly knowledge; only if one cultivates the stations of mindfulness can one smash the four inverted views.
