Second, the Shared Teaching is "hearing what is not heard," pointing to emptiness like dreams and illusions to speak of hearing. Third, the Distinctive Teaching is "not hearing what is heard," where what is heard is sovereign. Why? When conventional truth dies, "hearing what is heard" dies and the "hearing that retains" is born, because one sovereignly retains whatever is heard. When the Mahāyānasaṃgraha speaks of the consciousness that receives impressions where there are sense objects, this is the Mahāyāna of the Distinctive Teaching explaining hearing. Fourth, the Perfect Teaching is "not hearing what is not heard," where in the Great Parinirvāṇa the marks of hearing are completely extinguished.
