Next, using the four teachings to explain the meaning of "abiding": according to the different Dharma-gates distinguished by each teaching, the Buddha abides within them; out of pity for sentient beings, he therefore manifests abiding in Vaiśālī. Third, in terms of the contemplation of mind: the Avataṃsaka Sūtra states, "If you wish to see the Tathāgata's mind, merely contemplate the mind of sentient beings." Why? The threefold contemplation in a single mind comprehensively contemplates the three truths to open the Buddha's knowledge and vision; although one possesses physical eyes, they are named the Buddha eye and also named the wisdom of all species. If one uses the three wisdoms to abide in the samādhi of the three truths through the dharma of non-abiding, this is also the dharma attained by the Buddha. The Buddha abides within it; out of pity for sentient beings, without abandoning the Dharma of the Way, he manifests the affairs of ordinary beings and abides in worldly dharmas. In this, one must skillfully use the distinction of the six identities, which is the essential gate for entering the Mahāyāna.
