Question: If so, how are the differences among the three lands distinguished? Answer: Although the five kinds of persons with remainder alike perceive the truth and have exhausted delusions within the triple world, they have not at all perceived the Middle Way; having severed conditioned accumulation, they are alike born in [the Land of] Remainder and undergo change birth, which is also called the birth and death of expedient means. Those of the Distinct and Perfect teachings who sever common delusions see that emptiness is not empty; because they see emptiness, they sever conditioned accumulation, and by seeing non-emptiness, they infringe upon unconditioned accumulation. From the first bhūmi and the first abidance up through the ninth bhūmi, they sever unconditioned accumulation and alike receive the change birth and death of fruit and retribution, which is also called the birth and death of causes and conditions; under the tenth bhūmi, in the endurance of quiet extinction, two remaining rebirths are left; in the intermediate endurance of equal enlightenment, one remaining rebirth is left; partially dwelling in quiescent light, change is opened and they emerge from the rear of existence, having no further birth and death. Although their retributions differ and the abodes they dwell in are distinct, they are all beyond the triple world, alike deluded about the Middle Way, and are all of the same disposition in being accumulations through unconditioned causes.
