Question: This sūtra says, “According to the land through which sentient beings should enter the Buddha's wisdom...”, and the Lotus [Sūtra] also clarifies that the buddhas of the ten directions and three periods of time all open the three and reveal the one in the land of common abode. If there are buddha-lands that are purely śrāvakas, how do they enter the Buddha's wisdom and have it opened and revealed? Answer: This is discussed from the perspective of the majority. In lands of common abode, most open the three and reveal the one; that the Dàpǐn has this statement shows that throughout the ten directions this situation is not absent. Yet what all buddhas do is always for the one matter; even if in a land of common abode they cannot reveal the one, these śrāvakas in the land of remainder attain entrance into the Buddha’s wisdom. The Mahāyāna mind is the bodhisattva’s pure land; giving rise to compassionate vows focused on the four truths is called the Mahāyāna mind. The two vehicles act for themselves: śrāvakas have only the straightforward, pratyekabuddhas add the profound, and bodhisattvas universally deliver beings, being capable of both the straightforward and the profound; hence the Mahāyāna mind is added.
