"The mind directed toward bodhi... [living beings are born in] his land": Third, explaining the Mahāyāna mind. This refers to generating bodhicitta in the Mahāyāna of the four teachings, seeking above and converting below, and so it is called "great." Basing themselves respectively on the four truths, they raise the four universal vows, and so it is called a "vehicle." Three are provisional and one is real. The bodhisattva of the perfect teaching cultivates the provisional and real Mahāyāna, matures living beings, and purifies the buddha-land, practicing it himself, converting others, praising it, and rejoicing along with it. Later, when he accomplishes buddhahood: in the Land Where Common and Sage Coexist there are four kinds; in the Land with Remainder there are three kinds; in the Land of True Retribution there are two kinds; and in the Land of Eternally Quiescent Light there is only one. The rest is analogous to the straight mind.
