"Śikhin... up to ...pure": Third, relating the reasons for not seeing and seeing. Because "the benevolent one's mind has high and low, and does not rely on the Buddha's wisdom," he therefore does not see purity. A bodhisattva's mind has neither high nor low, and can rely on the Buddha's wisdom; hence they are able to see purity. The Buddha's wisdom is indeed the cause of seeing purity. Saṃsāra is regarded as low, and nirvāṇa as high; furthermore, purity is regarded as high, and defilement as low: because of these views, one sees impurity. The Buddha's wisdom is the reverse of this, called equality. Where there is no defilement, defilement is spoken of; where there is no purity, purity is spoken of; the marks of defilement and purity are mutually unhindered, and thus what Śikhin beholds as an impure land is immediately pure. Śāriputra has a barrier between saṃsāra and nirvāṇa, defilement and purity, and does not rely on the Buddha's wisdom; therefore he only sees defilement.
