Question: If so, was Vimalakīrti supporting and completing [the Buddha's] buddha-land, or was Vimalakīrti purifying his own buddha-land, or was he bringing about the purification of the buddha-lands of the disciples and others? Answer: Inquiring deeply into its principle, all these meanings are present. Just as in the "Life Span" chapter of the Lotus Sūtra, Śākyamuni attained enlightenment in the immensely distant past, yet now his emanation buddhas preach the Dharma in pure lands of the ten directions, and will do so in the future as well. This is analogous to the meaning of Vimalakīrti supporting and completing Śākyamuni's pure land. Furthermore, since Vimalakīrti was able to subdue and gather in those who had the affinity, when Vimalakīrti attains buddhahood they will all come to be born in his land; this is Vimalakīrti being able to tame sentient beings such that the buddha-land is purified. The disciples and bodhisattvas also received subduing in order to tame sentient beings; since sentient beings, through the disciples and bodhisattvas, severed evil and gave rise to good, when the disciples and others later attain buddhahood the sentient beings they tamed will all be born in their lands. Therefore it is said: "According to the sentient beings tamed, the buddha-land is purified."
