"Entering all classrooms, he instructed and enlightened the young and ignorant": his trace entered classrooms to instruct and enlighten the young and ignorant. The youthful are called "young" (tóng); the mentally dim are called "ignorant" (mēng). When the four kinds of roots of goodness are minute and obstructed by the afflictions of ignorance, their understanding of worldly transcendence is not yet open, which is called "young and ignorant." The four teachings guided and received them to break through their obstacle of afflictions, opening their four roots of goodness to grow and attain fruition, so that they would come to be born in the four lands.
